US Soccer System Explained
Soccer in the United States is organised into a “pyramid” of leagues and pathways — from youth and amateur levels all the way up to professional. But unlike many other countries, the U.S. system has a few unique features:
-
The top-tier leagues operate largely under a franchise/expansion model rather than traditional “promotion and relegation” (moving up/down based on performance) between all levels.
-
The national governing body, United States Soccer Federation (USSF), sanctions leagues and sets standards.
-
There are separate tracks for men’s, women’s, youth and amateur soccer.

Men's Soccer System
-
Tier 1 (Division I): Major League Soccer (MLS) — the top professional league.
-
Tier 2 (Division II): USL Championship — a professional second division.
-
Tier 3 (Division III and other pro/semi-pro): Examples include USL League One, National Independent Soccer Association (NISA), etc.
-
Tier 4+ (Amateur / semi-pro / developmental): Leagues like USL League Two, National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) serve players at the college, pre-professional and local levels.
Key point: Even though we speak of “tiers”, teams do not automatically move up or down from one tier to the next based purely on on-field performance (unlike many European systems). Entry to most leagues is through franchise investment, meeting league criteria, etc.

Women's Soccer System
-
The top professional league: National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) is the foremost professional women’s league.
-
Below that (semi-pro / amateur) leagues such as the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL), United Women’s Soccer (UWS) provide important playing opportunities.
-
Youth, college and amateur programmes feed into these pathways.
